Hero MotoCorp to Invest Up to ₹1,000 Crore in Ather Energy: A Major Push for India’s EV Market

Hero MotoCorp to Invest Up to ₹1,000 Crore in Ather Energy: A Major Push for India’s EV Market

Hero MotoCorp Increases Its Bet on Ather Energy

Hero MotoCorp has supported Ather Energy since 2016 and is currently the company’s largest shareholder.

As of June 30, 2026, Hero held a 29.48 percent stake in Ather Energy. Following the proposed fundraising, Hero’s shareholding is expected to increase to approximately 30.68 percent.

Although Hero approved an investment of up to ₹1,000 crore, Ather’s subsequent disclosure indicated that Hero would invest around ₹960 crore through convertible warrants.

The investment is expected to be completed within 15 days after the final required approval is received.

Ather Energy Plans a ₹1,200 Crore Fundraise

Ather Energy’s board has approved a total capital raise of approximately ₹1,200 crore through equity shares and convertible warrants.

Apart from Hero MotoCorp, the fundraising will include participation from the India-Japan Fund and Ather Energy co-founders Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain. The fundraising is therefore primarily supported by investors who are already connected with the company.

The fresh capital could help Ather strengthen product development, battery technology, manufacturing capacity, retail expansion and charging infrastructure. However, Ather has not officially provided a detailed breakdown explaining exactly how the entire amount will be spent.

New Affordable Ather Scooter Coming Soon

The investment arrives at an important time for Ather Energy, as the company prepares to introduce a new electric scooter based on its mass-market EL platform.

The production model is scheduled to be unveiled during Ather Community Day on August 29, 2026. The upcoming scooter is expected to be more affordable than Ather’s premium 450 range and could help the company target a much larger group of Indian buyers.

Ather currently sells electric scooters including the performance-focused Ather 450 series and the family-oriented Ather Rizta.

What Does This Investment Mean for Hero MotoCorp?

Hero MotoCorp already operates its own electric two-wheeler business under the VIDA brand. Its continued investment in Ather gives the company exposure to another established EV brand with its own technology, products, software and charging ecosystem.

Instead of depending entirely on VIDA, Hero is effectively building a broader electric mobility portfolio.

This strategy could help Hero compete against major electric two-wheeler players such as Bajaj Auto, TVS Motor Company and Ola Electric.

Is This Good News for Ather Energy?

The investment is positive because electric vehicle development requires significant capital. Manufacturing expansion, battery research, new products, service centres and charging infrastructure are expensive.

Hero’s backing also provides Ather with financial support from one of India’s largest and most experienced two-wheeler manufacturers.

However, funding alone will not guarantee success.

Ather must still deliver affordable scooters, improve service accessibility, control manufacturing costs and expand beyond major urban markets. Competition in India’s electric scooter segment is becoming tougher, especially as established manufacturers use their large dealership and service networks to attract customers.

MotoDecode Verdict

Hero MotoCorp’s additional investment shows that it sees long-term value in Ather Energy and does not consider the company merely a small financial investment.

For Ather, the funding provides valuable support before the introduction of its next mass-market electric scooter. For Hero, it strengthens its overall position in India’s growing electric two-wheeler industry.

The partnership looks strategically powerful, but the real test will be whether Ather can use the money to launch affordable products, expand its network and convert technological strength into sustainable sales and profits.
